A lot of students assume their road test gets cancelled if it snows. It doesn’t.
The SAAQ does not automatically reschedule exams because of winter weather. If you booked a test in December, January, or February, you are expected to show up and drive in whatever conditions exist that morning. If you want to cancel, you have to do it yourself before the appointment window closes.
That changes how you need to prepare.
The examiner’s standard doesn’t lower because of snow
Winter conditions don’t give you an easier test. If anything, they expose habits that wouldn’t have mattered in August. Examiners use the same evaluation criteria year-round, but they’re watching how you adapt to what’s on the road that day.
The main things that trip up students in winter:
Intersection approach. On dry pavement, braking late is survivable. On ice or packed snow, the car keeps moving longer than you expect. Experienced drivers build this into how they judge stopping distance. New drivers who’ve practiced mostly in good weather often haven’t built that instinct yet.
Parallel parking reference points. The curb is usually buried under a snowbank by mid-January. The reference lines you practiced from no longer line up the same way. You need to adjust, and if you haven’t practiced with a snowbank there, you may not know how much to adjust.
Keeping up with traffic. Some students slow down dramatically in winter out of caution, which is understandable. But dropping significantly below the posted speed without reason gets noted by the examiner. The goal is to drive confidently at a reasonable speed, not to stop being cautious – just to calibrate properly.
Winter tires are not optional on your exam vehicle
Quebec law requires winter tires on all passenger vehicles from December 1 to March 15. That applies to your exam vehicle too. If you show up with all-season tires after December 1, the examiner will not let you proceed. The test doesn’t happen. You lose your appointment fee.
Winter tires need the snowflake-on-mountain pictogram or must be studded. The old M+S designation alone doesn’t qualify. If you’re using your own car, check the tires before you book a winter exam date.

Quebec’s winter driving rules add another layer
Failing to adapt your driving to road conditions is a ticketable offence in Quebec: $60 and two demerit points. The rule applies during your road test the same as it applies on any public road. You’re expected to demonstrate that you understand winter driving, not just that you can operate a car.
There’s also the informal rule around vehicle visibility. Driving with snow or ice on your windshield, roof, or hood is illegal and dangerous. Officers call it driving a “mobile igloo.” Clear your entire vehicle before leaving for the exam – not just a small patch in front of the driver’s seat.
How to actually prepare for a winter exam
The most useful thing you can do is practice in winter conditions before the test. Not just a few minutes in a parking lot. Time on actual roads: stopping on snow, reading traction, parking with snowbanks, navigating intersections where the lines are covered.
If you learned to drive mostly in warmer months and haven’t spent time behind the wheel since fall, book a few lessons in winter conditions before your test date. A lesson the week before your exam gives you calibrated feedback while everything is fresh.
