1. Choose the Right Spot

Whenever possible, choose a parking space that’s already been cleared of snow and ice. Look for:
Plowed or salted areas
Spots with less slush or standing water
Flat areas, since parking on hills increases the risk of sliding

Avoid parking on steep inclines or areas where your car could slide into traffic.

2. Approach Slowly and Gently

Speed and sudden movements are your worst enemies on icy surfaces. When approaching a parking spot:
Reduce your speed well in advance
Apply gentle pressure on the brakes
✅ Use smooth steering movements to avoid skidding

3. Use Low Gear for Better Control

In very slippery conditions, you can shift into low gear (L or 1 on automatic transmissions) to reduce wheel spin and increase control when maneuvering into a spot.

4. Leave Extra Space

On icy roads, your car might slide a bit after you park — or other vehicles might slide toward you.
✅ Leave more space between your car and the next vehicle
✅ If possible, park away from high-traffic areas where other cars are likely to slide

5. Park Straight and Avoid Ruts

If the lot is covered in compacted snow, try to park straight and centered in the space to avoid getting stuck.
✅ Avoid deep ruts or frozen tire tracks, which can trap your wheels
✅ Turn your wheels straight when parking to make it easier to pull out later

6. Use the Parking Brake (With Caution)

Your parking brake can help secure your car, but in extreme cold, it might freeze in place.
✅ Use the parking brake only if the weather is not too cold or wet
✅ If you’re unsure, ask a mechanic about your car’s specific parking brake system

7. Clear Snow and Ice Before Leaving Your Car

Always clear your headlights, taillights, and mirrors so other drivers can see you, even when you’re parked.
✅ Remove snow from your roof to prevent chunks from sliding onto your windshield when you drive away
✅ Make sure your license plate is visible if required by law

8. Prepare for Exit

When you park, think about how you’ll leave later — especially if more snow is expected.
✅ Park facing out if you can, to make exiting easier
✅ If the ground is very icy, you may want to reverse into your spot so you can drive out in first gear

9. Carry Essentials in Case You Get Stuck

Even with careful parking, winter weather can surprise you. Keep a winter emergency kit in your car with:
✅ A small shovel
✅ Sand, salt, or cat litter for traction
Gloves and warm clothing
Booster cables and a flashlight
